Summer is Coming

In this 5-day short term project, we need to design of a custom typeface for an “ice event” using the program “Glyphs”. Casting the letters for the word ICE, EIS, GLACE, JÄÄ (etc) in different languages in ice, using letterforms of your font. On the basis of prints of the letters in 6-10 cm height we make 3-dimensional prototypes and silicon moulds for producing ice-letters in the freezer. The ice letters are photographed and become part of an “ice event” poster. The event can be related to sports, culture, tourism, etc. In the end of the project, we print the posters and present them in a small exhibition.
在五天的短期工作營中，必須選擇一種語言的「冰」去創造新字體。在電腦軟體尚設計出新字體後，還必須用真實的冰去雕刻出字型，將2D平面轉換成3D立體的真實冰塊字型。而後拍照攝影，去編排出一張以此「冰」為主題的活動海報。在五天的工作營最後，便會以一個小型的海報展覽方式呈現五天的成果。
In Chinese, whole year can not only be divided into four season but also be categorized into 24 solar terms. We decided to use one of the term “夏至” which means “summer is coming” to be our main subtitle. We hope to make an international guide, but we still want to design a new Chinese font. Then why we don’t combine them together!? In the other hand, when you look the word “summer” upside down, the shape is really similar to Chinese character “夏” In the end of this project, we created a fonts which both Chinese and foreigner can understand the meaning of the character.
對來自不會下雪的熱帶島嶼的人們而言，說到「冰」的第一個直覺聯想，通常不會是冰天凍地的冷風刺骨，而會是夏日裡冰品所帶來的一瞬清涼。由兩個臺灣人所組成的我們團隊便以此為概念，選擇以節氣夏至的「夏」去作主要的字型，打算以冰去打造出夏日的清涼感，制作一個夏日的冰品地圖。我們同時希望這會是份國際化的地圖，所以我們嘗試將「Summer」的英文偷偷藏進「夏」的筆劃裡。讓不懂中文的人，同樣也能明瞭這是一份夏天的地圖。
